Lake Chelan Report From Anton Jones For 3/30/15

LAKE CHELAN AREA FISHING REPORT FOR 3/30/15

Lake Chelan continues to be hot, trolling for Mackinaw in the Barrens and Kokanee uplake of Mitchell Creek along the North Shore.  Roses Lake is still producing relatively easy limits of planter rainbows for shore and boat anglers.  Antilon Lake is producing great numbers of brown trout for kayak and float tubing anglers.

Trolling for suspended Kokanee continues terrific.  Pull Mack’s Lure’s Mini Cha Cha Squidders in Orange on a short leader behind their Double D Dodgers in 00 to 0000 sizes.  Bait the Mini Cha Cha’s with Pautzke’s Fire Corn in natural or yellow.  We have caught these landlocked sockeye anywhere from 45 to 200 feet deep.

Laker fishing has been terrific in the Trench.  Fish within 3 to 5 feet of the bottom and keep your speed around .8 to .9 mph.  Silver Horde 3.5” Needlefish Squid rigs in glow colors fronted with a Mack’s Smile Blade and baited with a piece of Northern Pikeminnow has been our best pattern.

Rainbow trout are being caught on Roses Lake from the shore.  Catch them from shoreline locations with Pautzke’s Firebait in American Wildfire using a 30” leader on a slip sinker rig.  You can also catch them trolling using Mack’s Lure Mini Cha Cha Squidders behind a Mack’s Lure 0000 Double D Dodger.  Bait those mini cha cha’s with a piece of worm or a small nugget of Pautzke’s Fire Bait.

On Antilon Lake pull wooly buggers on a full sink line or Worden’s Roostertails to get your fill of Brown Trout.

Your fishing tip of the week is to take it easy when you have a Kokanee on.  Because of the way they thrash and their weak mouths you can lose the majority of the fish that you hook.  When they are jumping, pulling hard or shaking their heads, ease up on the reeling.  When they are following along, pick up the pace.  Do not pump the rod!  I think that if you land two-thirds of the fish that you hook, you’re good.  If you are losing more than half, look in the mirror for the problem.

The kid’s tip of the week is to make it a goal to get those school age kids out for some fishing over spring break.  Shore fishing at Roses or Antilon in our valley is particularly good right now.  They will remember those trips for the rest of their lives and that golden childhood goes fast.

The safety tip of the week is to grease the axle hubs of your boat trailer before that first big trip of the spring.  It’s no fun having that wheel fall off!
