Marine Area 7 (san Juans) To Close - February 15th Last Day

Salmon season closes in Marine Area 7

Action: Closes fishing for salmon in Area 7.

Effective Date: Feb. 16 through April 30, 2015.

Species affected: All salmon.

Location: Marine Area 7 (San Juan Islands).

Reason for action: Preliminary estimates indicate that encounters with hatchery and wild chinook have exceeded the preseason expectations which were set to ensure compliance with conservation objectives and agreed-to management plans. The fishery is being closed to control impacts on stocks of concern.

This closure happened just the way we thought it would play out! I am sure we will be paying for the additional fishing time in area 7 at the North of Falcon process coming up. Perhaps it time for a little reform on the derbies with the impact they have on resource. No matter what is done not everyone will be happy with the outcome.
