Lake Chelan Report From Anton Jones - Darrell & Dad;s Family Guide Service 5/18/2014

LAKE CHELAN AREA FISHING REPORT FOR 5/18/14

What just “keeps on keeping on” is trolling in the early morning above the Yacht Club on Lake Chelan for Mackinaw.  Rainbow trout fishing from the shoreline on Lake Chelan is still going strong.

On Chelan, fish Colyar Ledge above the Yacht Club for quality Lakers along the 290 foot bench or shallow between 175 and 195 feet deep.  Troll at speeds of 1 to 1.3 mph as close to the bottom as you can without snagging.  Silver Horde’s Needlefish Squiddy’s rigged with a Mack’s Lures smile blade in Glow and baited with a triangle of Northern Pikeminnow has been the “go to” presentation.  Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in GPLF on the outrigger rods has produced some bigger fish.

Fishing from the bank and docks on Lake Chelan with slip sinker rigs is still smoking hot right now.  Fish Pautzke’s Fire Bait in American Wildfire on a 30” leader to get these mostly 14 to 16 inch fish.

Your fishing tip of the week is keep your rod angle and your fish reeling moderate for best success.  A too high rod angle gives the fish leverage to tear the hooks out.  A low rod angle doesn’t allow your rod to bugger the head shakes and twists of the fish.  Too slow a retrieve gives the fish too much time to shake off.  Too fast a retrieve allows the fish leverage to tear off the hooks.

The kid’s tip of the week is to get them ready for Lake Chelan’s late spring / early summer shore bonanza.  Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pikeminnow are all available in the next month from docks and other public access points on Lake Chelan.  This can provide some fast action for kids with a short attention span.

Your safety tip of the week is to really focus on the loads and loads of floating woody debris on Lake Chelan.  With the avalanche load and the normal load coming, this will be a banner year for prop repair people  Slow down!
