Lake Chelan Area Fishing Reports - Anton Jones

What just keeps on keeping on hot is trolling near the Yacht Club on Lake Chelan for numbers of Lake Trout. The upper end of the trench and the face of Manson Bay are also productive at times. This is a great time for fishing a worm under a bobber on Roses for spiny rays. On Chelan, Lake Trout continued to bite trolled presentations above the Yacht Club that were pulled at about 1.5mph very close to the bottom in water that was 280 to 340 feet deep. Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in Purple Glow and Mack’s Cha Cha Squidders as well as Silver Horde’s Kingfisher Lite spoons in Glow Splatterback colors continued to rack up the Lakers during this reporting period. The bite between 6 AM and 8 AM is as good as I have ever seen it. The rest of the day isn’t half bad either. I would recommend the deep part of the trench for Lake Trout trolling in the middle of the day and the Face of Manson Bay in the evening. The same presentations that we used above the Yacht Club will also work in these locations. The deep part of the trench is in the 240’s now. Along the face of Manson Bay, look for water from 180 to 220 feet deep. Your fishing tip of the week is to use Off Shore Snap Weight clips to fish one pound Balls as “Poor Man’s Outriggers”. We fish one of these one pound balls off of Dipsy Diver rated rods and Shimano Tekota reels to get a 3rd and 4th rod all the way to the bottom. It gets harder to do and more tedious to reel in when you are trying to maintain contact in excess of 250 feet, but it does catch fish. I really like the “no drag” option of fishing those Kingfisher Lite spoons off of these rods. The kid’s tip of the week is to remember the advice of the mama bear when teaching fishing to the kids. That 3 to 5 year old is going to feel a sense of accomplishment by turning the handle on the reel a few times. At that age, it’s their fish. With those 6 to 10 or 12 year olds you’ve got to support the rod a bit. Somewhere from 10 to 12 most kids can do everything for themselves with some verbal encouragement. Let ‘em struggle a bit. It helps them overcome adversity later. The safety tip of the week is to continue to keep a short look out for floating debris out there. There are some big logs out there.
