Enhance Your Squid’s Visibility

Here’s a little trick utilizing chemical glow sticks to enhance the visibility of your squids in low light conditions (early morning or deep water).  By using small 1 – 1 ½ inch glow sticks under your squid bodies one can increase the luminous factor in your glow squids or turn non glow squids into ones that now glow!

The simplest way of doing this is to find a ½- ¾ inch length of clear vinyl tubing that the glow stick will fit snugly into, and then find a barrel swivel that will fit snugly into the other end and glue it in place with some super glue.  I only want the tubing long enough to be able to hold the light stick securely and will cut off any additional length.  (See the Accompanying Photo)

The holder then can be placed under the forward loop of your knot by pulling the leader out of the eye of the hook and threading the eye of the swivel down your leader and then rethread your leader back through the eye of the hook.  This will place the holder under the leader between the eye of the hook and your bumper knot and should lie against the shank of the hook.  (See the Accompanying Photo)  Now you can simply insert your glow stick into the holder, slide down your favorite twinkle skirt and squid body of choice and rig it behind your flasher.  Simply break the glow stick, starting the chemical reaction and you’re ready to fish.

By using these light sticks, it will cause your “Glow” squids to glow brightly all the time rather than just the first few minutes when they are charged and by utilizing them in your non glow squids you can enhance their visibility.  You will find that the glow sticks should last the better part of your fishing day and when their luminosity declines can easily be replaced.

Most of these light sticks glow “Green” but with a little searching one can find other glow colors in yellow, red and blue.  Though, in fishing with the various colors I still find the “Green” color to be the most productive.
